About the Estate

Fothringham Estate is a family-owned working estate of around 7,000 acres in Angus, surrounding the villages of Inverarity and Whigstreet.

For many generations, the Estate has been managed with long-term aims: to care for the land and environment for future generations, to support family, the local community and our staff, and to ensure the business continues to thrive.

The Estate comprises long-term tenanted farms, commercial forestry and residential properties, all managed as part of a sustainable rural business rooted in the Angus countryside.

Community

Community

The Estate has always been part of the fabric of the local community.

Fothringham Estate is committed to responsible public access and welcomes local residents and visitors. Walking routes and a car park are available at the Carrot Hill viewpoint, and we encourage the use of tracks and footpaths throughout the Estate in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

We are proud supporters of Inverarity Church and the parish of East, Old and Inverarity. The Fothringham family put on a series of fundraising concerts throughout the year.

The Estate actively supports the local economy by working with businesses and professionals based in Angus, Perthshire and Dundee for the services and goods we require.

Farming

The majority of Fothringham's farmland is held in traditional long-term agricultural tenancies. Many of our tenant families have farmed here for many years, with farms passed down from one generation to the next.

Our tenant farmers manage mixed and arable operations independently, making their own management decisions while stewarding the land for the future.

The Estate is also developing contract farming arrangements. Both tenancies and contract farming share the same aim: sustainable, long-term land management that protects the land for future generations.

Forestry

Around 2,000 acres of the Estate are given over to forestry. We grow Scots Pine, Norway and Sitka Spruce and Larch for the timber industry, managing our woodlands sustainably to balance commercial productivity with biodiversity and landscape conservation.

Alongside our commercial plantations, the Estate maintains large areas of native broadleaf and natural reserve woodland for conservation and amenity.
